At least 2,000 men have turned up for screening for the planned marriage to divorcees in Kano State. The state government through the state’s Hisbah Board, announced that it intends to marry off 1,000 divorcees, and consequently placed an advertisement in the media for interested persons to apply.
Speaking to Daily Trust on the issue, the Deputy Commander, Special Duties of the Hisbah board, Barrister Nabahani Usman said the turnout is impressive.
“The plan was to marry off 1,000 divorcees, but since the screening commenced three days ago, at least 2,000 men have turned up. We are indeed happy with the figure because it shows that the initiative is well accepted by the people”, he said.
He said 400 of the 2,000 applicants have filled forms containing 30 questions regarding their bio data and other relevant information, including health status.
Barrister Usman added that a seminar on the factors responsible for incessant divorce in the society and ways to ensure a successful marriage will be organised with a view to ensuring sustainability in the proposed marriages.
He said with a view to setting precedence, senior officers of the board have started marrying more wives.
“To set a good example, the Comptroller General of the board recently got married. I am planning to also take a third, and that is also what all other senior officers of the board are planning to do,” he said.
One hundred couples are to be married off in the first batch while the Kano State government will foot all expenses for the proposed marriages. Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso will stand as guardian for all the selected grooms while the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero will serve as father to all the proposed brides.
