Nigeria is blessed with abundant solar radiation, with the
north especially favoured with about 5.0- 7.0KW.m2/day. Prospects for solar
energy business are pretty high in spite of the global economic downturn. The
exploitation of this abundant, inexhaustible and free source of energy is
examined competitively. Data was collected both from primary and secondary
sources, the former through questionnaires to respondents in Abuja, Bauchi, Jos
and Kaduna and analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The
findings reveal greater percentages of the respondents willing to switch to
solar energy particularly with incentives as motivation. From the interviews
carried out with solar energy vendors, there is a clear indication that some
barriers in the development and penetration of solar energy in the region
exist, but there is a feeling of a brighter future ahead as the signs are
palpable.
